While Nike Kobe sneakers were easily attainable and often sitting in outlets, Kobe Bryant's unfortunate passing changed the perception of his signature line with Nike. Since agreeing to continue the sneaker line, Vanessa Bryant and Nike have slowly been reintroducing Kobes consistently with multiple releases, including the Kobe 5 Protro later in October. Following up on the X-Ray pair and the Team Bank Pack of the Kobe 8 Protro, the Kobe 5 will return in a new University Red colorway come Spring 2025.
This edition of the Nike Kobe 5 Protro retains the silhouette’s beloved performance features while introducing a bold new color scheme. The upper combines various textures and materials that enhance the shoe's aesthetic and functionality. Black faux snakeskin covers the mudguard, providing a luxurious feel, while the crinkled leather in university red adorns the toe and midfoot, adding a vibrant splash of color. Additional golden accents embellish the Nike Swoosh and the Kobe logo on the tongue, contrasting the otherwise red and black theme. The design is completed with a black foam midsole and a red and black rubber outsole that ensures excellent traction and durability on the court.
The Nike Kobe 5 Protro University Red will release in Spring 2025 through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s and GS sizing, the sneaker will retail for $190 and $120, respectively.
